Four easy tips to help your child practice spelling Spelling can be tough for an adult let alone a child. Sometimes it can be disheartening watching your child struggle with their spelling tests. That's why First Tutors have come up with four easy tips to help your child learn their spellings in a simple and easy way. 1. Break down the word I remember when I was still at primary school and struggling to learn longer words; my spelling tests were always a disaster. My parents decided at the time that it would be best to hire a private tutor to help me out. The lady that used to come to my house was a very sweet lady and she had a wonderful way of making those hard words seem so much simpler. Her method was to break the word up. I still remember that the word 'together' used to be so daunting. Her trick was to break the word into three smaller words; to-get-her. I loved it as a child and would often have a lot of fun finding words that could be broken down into smaller words. It's funny because even today (over thirty years later) I still sound out the word to-get-her when I spell it. Breaking down words with more than one syllable makes the word easier to remember. Use pieces of paper or card that you can cut up and have your child have fun putting the word back together. Clapping through a word is a great way to help your child grasp the concept of syllables; one clap per syllable. Examples of two-syllable words Project Narrow Wagon Rabbit Examples of three-syllable words crocodile elephant cucumber Examples of four-syllable words watermelon calculator helicopter 2. Look, cover, write, check This method has been adopted by many schools to encourage the learning of spellings in children. It works by: Giving a child a new word The child looks at the word Covers the word with their hand or a piece of paper Writes the word down Looks at the covered word to check they have spelt it right This method helps children practise the spelling of a word by encouraging them to learn the word and test themselves. 3. Use memory aids A great way to learn and remember to spell certain more difficult words that cannot be sounded out easily is by learning silly phrases or clever rhymes. For example the word BELIEVE can often be a tricky word (there are many tricky words in the English Language) for children to spell. By teaching them the phrase 'there is a LIE in beLIEve' you are showing them a great way to memorise the word and remember it. The word HEAR can be remembered using the phrase 'you HEAR with your EAR'. That way the child will learn that the word HEAR as in 'to listen' is spelt differently from the same sounding word HERE as in 'in this place'. Other great tips are: The rule 'i' before 'e' except after 'c'; reCEIve (but only when it sounds like BEE!) The word NECESSARY could be 'one Coat and two Sleeves'. RHYTHM would be 'Rhythm Helps Your Two Hips Move'. Miss Pell never 'MISSPELLS'. An ISLAND is land surrounded by water. One of my favourites is spelling out the word DIFFICULTY. There is a great scene in Roald Dahl's film version of Matilda where the terrifying Mrs Trunchbull asks a child if she can spell. The sweet child then explains that she can spell the word DIFFICULTY and with the help of the other children in the class sings: 'Mrs D, Mrs I, Mrs FFI, Mrs C, Mrs U, Mrs LTY'. A great little tune and one the children love to sing over and over. There are plenty of silly phrases and memory aids that can help your child remember the spelling of difficult words. Of course there are always exceptions to certain rules but that's what makes these silly phrases and memory aids so effective. Have fun exploring the different words and inventing some new silly phrases of your own. 4. Play word games There are so many games that can incorporate spelling and make learning those words fun for your child. Find games that your child will enjoy and make learning new words to spell a fun experience. Simple things like magnetic fridge letters to spell words on the fridge or a blackboard with chalk will inspire your child to want to learn. Other great ideas for spelling games are: Memory Spelling: Write two sets of the same words onto pieces of card, flip them upside down and have fun finding the right pairs. When your child finds a pair have them spell out the word. If they get it right they get to keep the pair, if not they place them back and have another go. Spelling Puzzle: Create a large cardboard puzzle full of words that your child is trying to learn. Then cut up the puzzle and have your child try and piece it back together. Ball bounce: Have your children sit in a circle. Bounce the ball to one child and say a word out loud. The child holding the ball must spell out the word. Sand words: Take a large tray and place some sand on it. You say a word and your child spells out the words using the sand. Even better on a summer's day on the beach where your child can use a stick or their finger to spell out words in the sand. There are so many games and fun ways to encourage your child to learn their spellings. Other simple games like Scrabble or simple Word Searches can be fun too depending on the age of your child. Tuning Nothing says amateur like an out-of-tune guitar. Take the time to learn how to tune your guitar quickly and accurately. With modern technology, you can even have a tuner on your phone, so theres really no excuse for playing out of tune. 2. Chord Learning guitar chords is relatively simple, and you will feel a great sense of   accomplishment once youve mastered the basic chords.  A chord is when more than one pitch sounds at a time.   (To be technically correct, a two-note chord is called a diad.) 3. Chord Symbol C     G7    Am7   Esus Guitarists know which chords to play in a song by reading the chord symbols.   Chord symbols can be quite simple or very complex.  The chord symbol includes the letter that represents the chord.   That letter can be followed by other symbols to designate variations.   You can learn how to play a chord by looking at a fretboard diagram. 4. Fretboard Diagram You can find fretboard diagrams for almost any chord by searching the online for guitar chords.  In a simple fretboard diagram, the top parallel line represents the nut, and the lines below represent the first four frets.   The vertical lines represent the six strings of the guitar.   The dots show you where to place your fingers.   The o represents an open string.   Fretboard diagrams can also include fret numbers and barre symbols. 5. Tabs (Tablature) Tabs  indicate where to place your fingers on the guitar.   Tabs are a little more complex than fretboard diagrams, and they can be used to show melodies and more advanced techniques.   In short, the lines represent the strings and the numbers indicate where to fret the string. Learning to play tabs will open up a whole new world of music. 6. Strumming Strumming is the most common way to play guitar chords.   Strumming is the act of drawing your fingers or pick across the strings so that all or most of the strings sound at once. The simplest strumming pattern is a top-to-bottom movement that strikes the strings on each beat.   To be a well-rounded musician, learn to play a variety of strum patterns. 7. Picking The act of using a pick or your fingers to play individual notes on the guitar is called picking.   Its called  fingerpicking  when you do this with your finger.   Use picking to play a melody or to play the individual notes of a chord one after another, which is called an arpeggio.   The tab below has a familiar melody followed by a chord arpeggio. 8. Open Chord An open chord is played using open strings on the guitar. These are the simplest chords to learn, and are a great place for beginners to start.   Here are some of the most common open chords. 9. Barre Chord You can play a barre chord by laying your index finger over all or some of the strings. You will see a curved line on the barre chords in a fretboard diagram. Barre chords allow you to play many more types of chords, but theyre much harder to learn and may take some practice before you gain the strength and skill to play them well.  10. Capo A capo is a simple device that clamps down on the strings to create a permanent barre over the strings.   A capo allows you to play open chords in the higher frets.   Learning to use a capo will help you play in many more keys without having to learn all of the barre chords. A capo can also make some keys much easier to play. If you learn these guitar terms and practice the basic techniques, you will be a well-rounded player ready to take on greater challenges and more difficult music. If you go to a restaurant, then youre encouraged to share your Yelp reviews. If you buy something from Amazon, then youre asked to rate that product. Even a post on Facebook allows for an instant Like or corresponding emoji response. How many Likes do you give out in a day? How sad do you feel when you dont get as many Likes in return? But even outside the ever-expanding cyber walls of social media, critical feedback is a vital aspect of the workplace and academia. We all need to know how were doing, and we’re often called upon the share our critiques of someone elses performance. What often gets lost in that sea of Likes are the responsible ways to give and receive critical feedback. Here are some helpful reminders to improve your critiquing skills. When Giving Feedback: Ask the Recipient to Rate Themselves Before delivering your honest assessment on something, ask the recipient of that review how they would rate themselves. This can open the door for a positive exchange, especially if that person recognizes they could have done a better job right from the start. It might also support your criticism if you are merely building upon something they already see as a problem area to work on. Find the Good A tenet of professional review writing is that you should try to find something positive to say about the piece, even if it’s a small something. When presenting a critique to a specific person, it would help to follow your criticism with praise. This doesnt mean you have to make things up, but you should try to find some words of encouragement to layer in with the corrections. This will help promote a sense of cooperation between you and that person. You dont ever want to send anyone away completely demoralized. That’s not good for the workplace or the classroom. Base Your Critiques on Actionable Substance A critique should serve as the foundation for improvement. If someone follows your sage advice, then it should make whatever theyre working on better. It will help if the critique is based on actionable substance, as opposed to vague sentiments. You merely have to watch the Judges Table critiques during any episode of Top Chef. Those judges dont just say, “I didnt like the chicken.” Instead, they say, “The chicken lacked seasoning or was undercooked.” The next time that chef prepares a chicken, you can bet theyll be busting out the salt and meat thermometer. Also notice how that statement focuses on the chicken, not the cook. Spin It Back to Yourself We all make mistakes. Although it could help the person youre sharing feedback with to hear that, it might be stronger if you can relate to them by sharing some of the mistakes youve made in the same area. This will make what you have to say more relevant and wont alienate that persons feelings about their own shortcomings. When offering advice, it’s also helpful to use statements like “I would” rather than “you should.” When Receiving Feedback Take It All In Unless prompted, you dont really need to defend your actions. It is clear something went amiss, at least as far as the perspective of your critic is concerned. You can only understand where they are coming from if you take it all in. If youre formulating a response in your head, then you might miss half of what theyre saying. Active listening is a skill that can change all your relationships for the better. Focus On the Benefits Writers are constantly being critiqued by their peers, editors and even family members who they share their work with. When several people point out the same failings on a particular project, then it would appear that there’s something worth looking into. If the reworking of the project makes it better, then the feedback was really helpful. Stay focused on the goal of making improvements, and youll soon forget all about the negativity of a critique. Ask for Clarity After reading this post, youre going to be a brilliant critical feedback giver and receiver. However, not everyone will have the benefit of this sage advice. You might need to ask for clarity to better understand the critique coming your way. Go back to the Top Chef example. If someone merely says, I didnt like it, then ask them to dig deeper and get specific. Two things might happen. They could land on a specific point to help with those improvements, or they could discover that their criticism lacks merit. Yes, that can actually happen, and it’s something else to take in. It’s also helpful to ask an open-ended question for direction, like “What can I do to improve?” Or “How would you have handled this situation?” Finally, you want to thank the person for providing feedback. However painful it might have been to hear it, they still took time out of their day to give the review. That time has value, and they should be thanked for sharing it.
